Once the thing was buried, we took Voodoo home and headed over to the diner. When we walked in, I saw Fiona at a booth by herself quietly eating a stack of pancakes.

“Hang on a second,” I said to Alex.

I went over to her table, and she didn’t look up at first. “Hello, Fiona,” I said softly so I didn’t startle her.

“Oh, hi, Allegra. Sorry, I was kind of lost in thought.”

“It’s okay. I just wanted to come over and offer my condolences. I’m so sorry for your loss. My friend Beatrix and I went to the funeral this morning, but because of the rain, we didn’t get to properly pay our respects.”

“I’m sorry I didn’t see you. I was just…”

“It’s okay. I just wanted you to know that we were there, and that if you need anything, all you have to do is ask.”

“Thank you,” she said and sniffled. “I’m really going to miss coming into your shop.”

“You’re leaving town then?” I asked.

“Without the RV, I don’t really have a place to live right now. Tim had insurance, but until I get that check, I’m going to stay with my sister a while longer. Then I’ll figure out what to do. I may come back here. I really like Knox Hills, but I can’t make those types of decisions right now. Things have to settle first.”

“I completely understand,” I said. “I’ll let you get back to your dinner.”

“Thank you, Allegra.”

The hostess had seated Alex at a booth on the other side of the diner, and I joined him. “How is she doing?” he asked as I slid into the booth.

“She seems okay. I imagine about as good as can be expected when your husband dies under suspicious circumstances,” I said.

“Oh, I was wondering what you thought about it. So, you don’t think it was a drunken accident or suicide?”

“I don’t,” I said.

“Any idea who it might have been?” Alex asked.

“Right now, my theories are that Jim from the bakery killed him over a coffee punch card, or the mysterious cooler I found by the pond could be a clue,” I said.

“That’s not much to go on,” Alex said.

“No, it’s not.”
